A MONK’S CHRISTMAS SPIRT

CHRISTMAS is still a long way off (whew!) but Santa’s West Australian elves are already busy organising gifts for underprivileged children around the world.

The Monk Brewery & Kitchen is calling for people to embrace the festive spirit early this year – by filling a shoe box with gifts for a child who will otherwise go without on Christmas Day.

The Monk is an official collection point for Operation Christmas Child, an organisation that delivers gifts to children in cities, villages and slums across the world. The program is now in its 28th year.

Official boxes can be collected from the Monk, but any standard-size shoe box can also be used if the lid and box is wrapped in colourful paper.

“The idea is to fill your box with a range of simple gifts, as well as at least one item that will be treasured by the recipient. Items that really bring a big smile to a child’s face include dolls, a soccer ball with a small pump, and fun outfits they can wear”.

“It’s also great to include a few practical items for school or personal hygiene, and some additional small items to play with. You are also welcome to include a photo of yourself and a personal message!”

Approximately 100 million gift-filled boxes have been sent to children around the world since the initiative was launched in 1990. It began as a direct response to the plight of children in Romanian orphanages and, over the years, boxes have been sent to innocent children in their time of need, including those caught in modern conflicts such as the Balkan War and the Chechen Crisis.

Each box should have a note attached to the top of the box nominating what age group it is most suitable for, and whether it’s best for a girl or a boy. Operation Christmas Child also requires people to include $10 per box, which helps the organisation breakeven on delivery costs.

Items that are not permitted include used or damaged items, food and candy, war-related items, liquids or aerosol cans, medications or vitamins, and breakable items (such as snow globes).

The last day for dropping off gift boxes to The Monk is end of October.
